Description
A rather 1 m by 60 cm wide than 1 x 0.60 cm wide and 2 m deep vertical hole gives access to a relatively small sandstone cave associated with a [comparatively] small depression right next to the road, as if it being a mislaid culvert (Arbenz, T 2014.12.26 Mss: Richard Hudson 15-02-2014 Krem Am Pyrchoh.docx). The cave may result from dissolution of a limited occurrence of limestone or calcareous sandstone within the sandstone of the Therria Formation (note 1). ETYMOLOGY: It was probably Mulat Amse (from Thangsah N25°10'11”: E092°12'55”) who must have told a cave name like Krem Am Pyrta (note 2), which was interpreted as Cave of the roaring water (note 3) but corrupted (note 4) into Krem Am Pyrchoh (note 5).SETTING: Above the orographically right (locally western) bank of the Myntu (Hari River) and on the interfluve shared with the Um Ryngka and west of the village of Thangsah (N25°10'12”: E092°12'38”) in an area where Early Palaeocene / Selandian (GOGOI, B et al. 2009) sandstons, calcareous sandstones and limestones of the Therria Formation (MATHUR & EVANS 1964) are exposed on the surface (NAG & PAL 1996 geological map). SITUATION: From the vilage of Thangsah (N25°10'11”: E092°12'55”) about one kilometre in a direct line WSW or at the distance of one ca 20 mins walk west of the village and 20 m south of an unspecified the road in a growth of areca palms (Areca catechu) which foreigners took as an areca nut plantation (-betel nut-) ca 1.5 km west of Tangsah [sic!] (Arbenz, T 2014.12.26 Mss: Richard Hudson 15-02-2014). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2014.04.29: Low in bedding plane, too tight. Exploration finished (Arbenz, T 2014.04.29 Cave record overwiev 2_ 2014.xlsx). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2014.12.26: Rather a three-dimensional bedding plane (cave-) passage with a volume than a two-dimensional low bedding plane washed out layer between two sandstone layers varying from 30 cm to 1 m in height (Arbenz, T 2014.12.26 Mss: Richard Hudson 15-02-2014). CAVE POTENTIAL: Jos -Yoxz Burgers, Richard -Rich- Hudson, Marcel Dikstra and Des McNally failed to grasp the significance of the geological monument and promised never to return (Arbenz, T 2014.12.26 Mss: Richard Hudson 15-02-2014). CULTURAL HISTORY: The evidence of a cave of the roaring water indicates a Typhon Cave (note 6) which is simply unknown (Arbenz, T 2014.12.26 Mss: Richard Hudson 15-02-2014) for especially talented expedition cavers. CAVE LIFE: It was probably rather Shabuddin -Shabu- Shaik from Hyderabad than the expedition cavers Jos -Yoxz- Burgers, Richard -Rich- Hudson, Marcel Dikstra and Des McNally who collected on 15th February 2014 three specimens of cricket en [sic!] spider for the biologists (Arbenz, T 2014.12.26 Mss: Richard Hudson 15-02-2014).s, calcareous sandstones and limestones of the Therria Formation (MATHUR & EVANS 1964) are exposed on the surface (NAG & PAL 1996 geological map). EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2014.02.15: Jos 'Yoxz' Burgers, Richard 'Rich' Hudson, Marcel Dikstra, Elena Buduran, Des McNally and Shabuddin 'Shabu' Shaik left just after nine for the slog up to Thangsan [sic! qua: Thangsah N25°10'11”: E092°12'55”] village where we were to meet with our guide; Mulat Amse. The weather was particularly unkind to us with rain and high humidity. A short and wet hike from the village together with an entourage of locals led us to the entrance of Krem Am Pyrchoh. This small and uninspiring entrance led to a smaller and less inspiring cave in sandstone. On surfacing we were told of another cave [Krem –>Pdein Laphiang] about an hour trek away. At this point Des decided to head back down the hill as he was feeling a bit unwell following the previous nights jollities (anonymous Brooks, S J et al. 2014.04.05 Mss: Diary Meghalaya 2014 Second Edit: 15th February, Saturday).
