Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

The entrance to an unexplored cave at the base of the Shmia Kelang is said to invite cavers (Ka D. Gashnga, Shillong Secretariat Officer 2001.04.19 personal communication). ETYMOLOGY: The Amwi (Khasi) -ka shmia- is said to be the name of a stone, a rock (D. Gashnga, Shillong 2001.04.19 personal communication) and the Amwi (Khasi) -kelang- is suspected to be the same as the standard Khasi -kyllong- (adjective) very big (note 1). SITUATION: The Shmia Kelang is siad to rise in the forest near the village of Lamin (note 2), which is accessible from Sohkha (note 3), which lies on the road from Dauki (25°11'05”N: 92°01'08”E) north via Amlarem (note 4) to Jowai (note 5).The Survey of India sheet 83-C/SW (editions 1922, 1939) indicates the location of the village of Lamin at linear distances of one or two kilometres WNW from Sohkha, 4 km NNE from Dauki, some 4 km due west of Nongtalang, and 2 km east from Amkoi (note 6). GEOLOGY: According to NAG, S & PAL, T (1996 geological map), the vilage of Lamin stands on the Langpar Formation (Medlicott 1869), represented by calcareous shale, sandy limestone and fine calcareous sandstone (Roy Chowdhury 1974) of Upper Cretaceous (Upper Maestrichtian) to Lower Palaeocene (Bhattacharya & Bhattacharya 1978) or Danian (Mathur & Evans 1964) age. CAVE DESCRIPTION: This rock is big, said Ka D. Gashnga -- pointing to her impressive sized officer's desk in room 110 of the Shillong Secretariat -- and the luring -hole- -- pointing to the leg space of the desk -- needs to be entered, because nobody ever has been into it and knows what is there. She will be happy to arrange for guides as soon as she retires in December 2001 (Shillong, Laitumkrah residence phone 224730). CAVE POTENTIAL: Apart from the elusive Ka Krem Pubon –> Amkoi, which has been reported from Syndai at large (or, more likely, from the village of Amkoi), the caves on the –>Lum Bareh and at –>Kudeng Rim are also unidentified, unmapped, and unexplored caves in the vicinity ofAmlarem.age of Lamin stands on the Langpar Formation (Medlicott 1869), represented by calcareous shale, sandy limestone and fine calcareous sandstone (Roy Chowdhury 1974) of Upper Cretaceous (Upper Maestrichtian) to Lower Palaeocene (Bhattacharya & Bhattacharya 1978) or Danian (Mathur & Evans 1964) age.
