Description
Some of the man-made, soil-sunken –>Kashmir Swat Pits are situated near Gufkral (note 1) village. SHARMA (1982) excavated and POSSEHL (1988: 177) lists seven radiocarbon datings.
NOTE 1: »Guf« is obviously related to the Sanskrit 'gufa', the Arabic 'khaf', the German 'Kaff', and the English cave. A village of Guf is marked near N33°46': E075°08' (Everest 1830) on AMS sheet NI43-01 (U 502 Series, 1960 edition) on the left-hand of the road to Jammu and at a spot about 40 km from Srinagar or 20 km beyond Awantipur.
