Kiomoni Quarry Cave 1
-5.069042,39.051467
Location
Approximately 1 km west of Kiomoni village and about 500 m before the road reaches Amboni Caves two limestone quarries are located at the right hand side (north). The first quarry does not have any visible cave entrances. In the second quarry, a number of cave entrances were found. Some of them closes down after a few metres. Beside Kiomoni Quarry Cave 1 there is another entrance that obviously leads into a major cave system. Due to lack of time this cave was not investigated.
Description
Kiomoni Quarry Cave 1 is the only cave that was closely studied during the 1994 project. Two entrances lead into a network of rift passages, chambers and passages with keyhole cross-sections directed predominantly from SE towards NW. A second family of SW-NW orientated tectonic structures form a subordinate system of passages. Calcitic depositions are rare inside the cave. However, a chamber in the NW part of the central section of the cave is nicely decorated. The galleries in Kiomoni Quarry Cave 1 are generally of smaller size than those of the Amboni Caves. Nevertheless, Kiomoni Quarry Cave 1 has a unique feature in the form of a long straight passage leading towards NW without any offleadings. The sediment covered floor of this tight keyhole-shaped conduit shows evidence of flowing water during the wet season. The passage has been followed until it gets very tight. Because progress forces the explorer to crawl on bat guano survey was stopped in open passage without air current. 462 m long Kiomoni Quarry Cave 1 is endangered to be quarried away.
