Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 25/03/2016

An abandoned hematite mine, which was used as a as a nesting place by pigeons (BUCHANAN 1807, 2: 46). SITUATION: Somewhere near the village of »Chica Nayakana Hully« or Chiknayakanhalli (note 1), which lies at a travelling distance of 140 km along roads approximately north-west via Tumkur and Kibbanahalh towards Huliyar. CAVE LIFE: BUCHANAN (1807, 2: 46): »In one of the excavations that have been made by digging out the haematites, and which forms a cave, I found the nests of a flock of wild pigeons, exactly resembling those of the caves of Europe.« HUTSON, MICKLEBURGH & RACEY (2001: 4): »In temperate areas, caves and mines provide ideal conditions for hibernation and, in their warmest parts, for nursing. Other smaller underground structures, such as rock crevices or ledges, may also be of importance in some areas. The world’s largest aggregations of bats are found in caves in both temperate and tropical regions, where millions of animals may be found in a single site. Abandoned mines may also house hundreds of thousands of bats« (Chiroptera).
