Description

An about 6 m wide choked swallet (closed depression or doline, in geo-engineer speak: sinkhole) in the 1940ies blocked by shepards with timber about (estimated?) 12 or 15 m down is found at Budher, a lone hut in the Durbita Khal (perhaps for: Durbita -khat- = stream) south-west below the Budher Forest Rest House. This item is possibly identical with the –>Budher Cave (Kotliya 2005.11.07). SITUATION 1942.10: Choked Pot lies 230 yards (210.3 m) on a bearing of 100° (south by east) from the native cow-shed cum house at Budher, the place about 500 m below (downstream? upon arriving from Chakrata?) the Budher Forest Rest House (Leakey 1942.10.10 location map: Budyar Hut Pots). SITUATION 1942.12: There is one pothole in the vicinity of the place called Budyar [Budher hut] (Leakey 1942.12.03 Mss: Himalayan Caves). SITUATION 1946.06 Timber Pot is indiacted about 120 m or 135 m (note 1) upstream (approximately north-east) of Mud Pot [i.e. –>Budher Mud Pot] (Leakey 1946 June location map: Bodya Pothole Map): Marked. SITUATION 1946.08: 70 yds [64 m] up hill from Mud Pot [i.e. –>Durbita Mud Pot] in a small valley (Leakey 1946.08.01 location map: Budyar Hut). SITUATION 1951: Between Slit Pot and Bodhyar Potholes (LEAKEY 1955: 58). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1942: … pothole with a 20 ft. [6 m] wide open shaft, unfortunately blocked [in the 1940ies] with fallen trees and timber 40 ft. [12.2 m] down (1942.12.03 Mss: Himalayan Caves). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1946: Timber Pot is … a large gaping entrance, and a depth of 50 ft. [15.24 m] down to a choke of rotting timber. (Glennie 1946.08.01 location map: Bodyar Area Potholes). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1955: A twenty foot wide pothole blocked with rotten tree trunks about forty feet down (LEAKEY 1955: 58). PROSPECTS: Glennie (1946.08.01 Mss: Bodyar Area Potholes) lures eager collapse diggers to Budher with hinting a lot of likely but otherwise unspecified swallets. Pothole Map): Marked. History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1942.10.09: Leakey went down two more [of the] deep sinkholes (Glennie 1942.10.05-19 Mss: Diary, 9th October 1942) at Budher itself (read: Not only Budher Mud Pot but also Budher Timber Pot and Budher Slit Pot). Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018
