In a Mahratta MS. [manuscripts] of the Mackenzie collection (Madras Journal, No. 30, p. 86), there is a legend of the origin of the town of Sri-hari-cota [note 1], on the south boundary of Telinghana [note 2], close to the west shore of the Pulicat lake [note 3], which states the submersion of another town; the ruins of which, according to the Ms. are still to be seen underneath the water. Tricansu, a king of the Solar race, is said to have been founder of it. The miracle of a sea shell passing by a subterranean passage to the Pandurangha temple [note 4], might have originated from circumstances of subterranean beds of marine shells being found, at Madras, etc., inland (NEWBOLD, T J 1846a: 205).In a Mahratta MS.
