Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 27/04/2016

An approximate number of 30 »rock shelters« or caves which sheltered »ancient man« are situated in the area around Modi (Mori), the Chibbar Nala and Hinglajgarh fort (note 1), about 11 km north-west of Bhanpura (note 2) and on the road from Rampura (note 3) south-east to Bhanpura (DIXIT 1959; Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology 1989; IAR 1957-8, 1958-9: 26-28; ). Compare the –>Sitakardi rock shelters. ARCHAEOLOGY: MURTY, M. L. K. & REDDY, K. Thimma (1976: 224) refer to DIKSHIT, M G (1957-58: 26-27) reporting an »Upper Palaeolithic-like« stone tool industry »displaying a tendency toward microlithization« which is »known … in the vicinity of several rock shelters at Mori, Mandosar district, Madhya Pradesh.« ALLCHIN & ALLCHIN (1993: 82): »At Modi rock shelter on the Chambal valley the sequence is much the same [note 4] but the Late Stone Age occupation begins from the bedrock.«

NOTE 1: Hinglajgarh (Hingladgarh, Hingladjgadh) 24°40'N: 75°47'E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) is indicated as »Hinglagarh« in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 53 E1) in Mandsaur district, Madhya Pradesh. NOTE 2: Bhanpura 24°31'N: 75°44'E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 53 E2) in Mandsaur district, Madhya Pradesh. NOTE 3: Rampura 24°28'N: 75°26'E (nima.mil/geonames 16.11.2003). NOTE 4: In the archaeologically excavated Lekhania shelter (Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh state) the »stone industry shows certain sequential changes and developments in each case, the tools becoming smaller, more delicately made and more varied in the upper layers. Pottery also makes its appearance at a certain point, and becomes more frequent towards the top« (ALLCHIN & ALLCHIN 1993: 82).
