Relatively large cavities of possibly minute size reports VOYSEY (1850b: 272) to occur in comparatively large masses of masses of an earthy and crystalline brown limestone outcropping on the south-west bank of the Manjera (Manjra River) at a spot which lies at a travelling distance of 5 coss or about 10 km or 15 km north-east of Bidar (N17°54': E77°33'). SITUATION: VOYSEY (1850b: 272): Saturday, 19th March, 1819.— Reached Dammergidda [note 1] at sunrise and proceeded to the Manjera [note 2], which I crossed and encamped at Chillelah [note 3] in sight of Beder [Bidar], distant about five coss [10 km or 15 km] on a hill. CAVITIES DESCRIPTION: Where VOYSEY (1850b: 272-273) crossed on 19th March 1819 the Manjera (Manjra River) on his way from Oudeghir (note 4) south-east via Doongong (note 5) to Beder (Bidar), The left [north] bank is of the black alluvium, about fifteen to twenty feet [4.6 to 6.1 m] high, sometimes much less; the right [south] bank rises to upwards of 60 feet [18.3 m in height, forming a hill of considerable size on which Chillelah is seated; the bank is composed of large masses of an earthy and crystalline brown limestone very much waterworn and containing large cavities which appear to have been formerly filled by pieces of wacké, in some places containg large masses of flint, and in others forming a compound rock being a cement to a rocky compound of wacké basalt, clay and flint. Near the upper part it has the appearance of reguar stratification, and on its top wacké easily decomposable is spread over it. I have yet to observe it more closely. The carbonate of lime contains a small portion of alluvium. On 21st March 1819 Dr. Voysey took a more accurate survey of the banks of the river Manjera in the neighbourhood of Chillerjee [sic!]. The confusion or mixture of the two rocks is much greater than I a t first imagined. I noticed close to the present level of the river a rock of compact basalt which at a distance of three or four feet becomes waké, passing into the admixture of carbonate of lime and lumps of wacké, and that again into the porous limestone containing clay and green earth, presenting externally large cavities out of which those substances have been washed; above the limestone is a brownish wacké on which the town is built … in height, forming a hill of considerable size on which Chillelah is seated; the bank is composed of large masses of an earthy and crystalline brown limestone very much waterworn and containing large cavities which appear to have been formerly filled by pieces of wacké, in some places containg large masses of flint, and in others forming a compound rock being a cement to a rocky compound of wacké basalt, clay and flint.
