Description

Cavities much resembling pot holes of all sizes, from that of a walnut to upwards of four feet [1.2192 m] across are said to have formed due to the weathering of highly hornblendic schist (note 1), which occurs as masses of an older hornblendic gneiss embedded in a variety of the granitoid gneiss typically consists of a rather porphyritic granite, consisting of quartz and whitish and greyish felspar [sic! qua: feldspar], including imperfect crystals and grains of a reddish or pink felspar [note 2] (KING, W & FOOTE, R B 1865: 300 = 78). SITUATION: One of the finest examples was noticed at the village of Kunniyur [note 3], 3 miles [4.8 km] north-east of Tiagar [note 4]. Here the included blocks were observed in great numbers, some being rounded and other angular in shape; the largest measured upwards of 4 feet [1.2 m] across, and appeared to be deeply imbedded below the surface. Although the matrix has the granitic character strongly developed, none of the included fragments showed any igns of having been exposed to great heat. The included blocks consist of a hard, highly hornblendic schist, which seems to resist atmospheric influences far better than does the rock in which they are inclosed. Occasionally, however, they appear to have weathered more rapidly, and to have given rise to cavities much resembling pot holes. Good examples of such included masses may be seen to advantage at Yellavanasur [note 5], in the old mud fort, also at Cunatur hill [note 6] (KING, W & FOOTE, R B 1865: 300 = 78).
