Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 14/05/2016

The disappearance of a stream at a place called »Ratma« (Rotma?) in the proximity of massive limestones (most likely Proterozoic Kanger Limestone, Indrawati series, Purana Group) is said to display »discrete sinkholes down for about four metres« (ADYALKAR & RADHAKRISHNA 1972: 136). SITUATION: No place called »Ratma« but a village of »Rotma« is indicated both on AMS sheet NE44-03 Jagdalpur (U502 series, 1963 edition) and on Survey of India sheet 65-E/16 (edition 1967) near N19°12': E081°49" (Everest 1830): 540 m asl on the right (northern) bank of the Indravati river. Shown in the riverbed about a kilometre south of Rotma are rocky rapids (at 531 m asl, fordable between February and June), and immediately above the northern bank of the Indravati (and above the rapids) lies a seasonal pool fed by two inlets and an overflow channel.
