Description

Between the villages Jukh and Oakee [note 1] again, gneiss is met with; below in the bed of the [Mandakini] river [note 2] is a mass of calcareous tufa with vegetable impressions. It is of a light buff yellow colour, is rather porous with a semi-crystalline grain. It is a very pure carbonate of lime, and affords an excellent cement by burning, which was used for the stone temples erected one at Kedarnath [note 3], … the other at Ookee Muth [note 3] where the Raool, or chief priest, resides (HERBERT 1842: lxvii).Between the villages Jukh and Oakee [note 1] again, gneiss is met with; below in the bed of the [Mandakini] river [note 2] is a mass of calcareous tufa with vegetable impressions.
