Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A south-west facing and relatively large cave entrance (up to 39 m wide and 5 m high) gives access to a solitary, daylight-lit cave chamber where a footpath winds its way between rocks and shallow pools of water beneath a ceiling almost entirely covered with stalactite speleothems (after Laumanns 2006.03.26 cave plan: Ghinia Nag). SITUATION: This nice cave in travertine lies near the village of Malani (note 1) and had been reached by walking from Nachni (note 2) for 1.5 hours (west?) along a well-maintained footpath upstream into a tributary valley to the right bank of the main river (Ram Ganga / Ramganga). The path leads straight to the cave and traverses it (after Laumanns & Breitenbach 2006.04.15 Mss; Laumanns 2006.03.26 -Ghinia Nag- cave plan). The GPS position recorded for Ghinia Nag indicates a spot at an elevation between 5000 und 7000 feet (1524 to 2134 m asl) west of the river Ram Ganga (Ramganga) and at linear distances of about 11 km or 12 km NNE from Berinag (N29°48': E00°04') and 12 km ENE from Chaukori (Choukhori, Choukori, Chowkori, Choukri N29°50': E080°01') or 10 km SE from –>Naikaneshwar Dana and 17 km ENE of –>Musleswar Gupha. CAVE DESCRIPTION: The up to 9 m high travertine chamber has a wide entrance (40 x 9 metre) and is covered with stalactites as well as stalagmites and flowstone. Ghinia Nag is still growing in size. Hence, the interior of the cave is fairly wet (Laumanns & Breitenbach 2006.04.15 Mss). CAVE LIFE: A drowning horseshoe bat was rescued during our visit by hanging it into a tree (Laumanns & Breitenbach 2006.04.15 Mss).A south-west facing and relatively large cave entrance (up to 39 m wide and 5 m high) gives access to a solitary, daylight-lit cave chamber where a footpath winds its way between rocks and shallow pools of water beneath a ceiling almost entirely covered with stalactite speleothems (after Laumanns 2006.03.26 cave plan: Ghinia Nag).
