Pung Umthymmai (New Water Pond) is a supposedly bottomless pool of water (up to 4 m deep) and rejuvenated spring of water (note 1), which is reputed to be a Legendary Pool (note 2) dubbed Mystery Pool (note 3), that has been recorded under a variety of titles: Krem Umthymmai (Stead, J 2004.02.17 Mss: Krem Tyngheng + other caves in Sem Masi Area 17-02-04) Um Thymmai at Nongryng Kott (Hodgson, D 2002 Mss: Meghalaya Diary) Um-Thyme pool (Hodgson, D 2006.02.26 map: Samassi Recci) Umthymmai at Shnong Ryngkoh (Kharpran Daly, B D 2002.03.07 personal communication) Umthymmei (Boycott, Antony 'Tony' 2006.02.26 Mss: Umthymmei). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi adjective -thymmai- means fresh, new while the noun -ka thymmei- is a scar, a mark (SINGH, N 1906: 230). The Khasi verb -ryngkoh- is synonymous with ”rynsied” and means to caper (SINGH, N 1920: 60). SITUATION 2002: At Shnong Ryngkoh [note 4] (Kharpran Daly, B D 2002.03.07 personal communication). SITUATION 2006: The GPS position recorded for Umthmmai indicates a spot 4.2 km in a direct line approximately east-southeast from the village of Samasi (N25°24'07”: E092°32'52” WGS84). History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2002.03.07: Brian D. Kharpran Daly (2002.03.07 personal communication) had heard of a spring of water, explicitly called Krem Umthymmai near Pala (N25°24'45”: E92°34'10”: 968 m asl). 2004.02.17: Bikin Paslein, then the Samasi Village Headman, was understood to have told the cave name Krem Umthymmai to Brian D. Kharpran Daly (Stead, J 2004.02.17 Mss: Krem Tyngheng + other caves in Sem Masi Area 17-02-04). 2006.02.26: Simon J. Brooks, Boycott, Antony 'Tony', Katharina 'Kate' Janossy, 'Yorkshire' Dave Hodgson, Matthew 'Matt' Hutson and Raplang [Sukhlain] visited (Boycott 2006.02.26 Mss) the enchanted place of mystery … guided by Gripbymon Dkhar (of Semmasi [sic! qua: Semasi]) accompanied by several (six) locals from Samassi [sic! qua: Semasi] village / area [note 8] (Brooks, S J 2006 undated Mss amendments to Boycott 2006.02.26 Mss).
