An unspecified and unidentified Bat Cave or Krem Labit (Kharpran Daly 2004.07.18 Mss) is said to lie somewhere in the vicinity of the village of Brishyrnot. ETYMOLOGY: The Synteng -ka labit- (note 1) is the same as the standard Khasi -ka lymbit- and signifies a bat (BLAH, E 2007: 27; SINGH, N 1906: 124; SINGH, N 1920: 38) in the sense of a a mainly nocturnal mammal, zoologically Chiroptera, capable of sustained flight, with membranous wings that extend between the fingers and connecting the forelimbs to the body and the hindlimbs to the tail (note 2). The Khasi place name -Brishyrnot- designates a clearing and originates from a combination of the noun -ka bri- for an area of land used for growing crops (note 3) with the composite word -shyrnot- based on the verbs -shyrti- (note 4) and -ot- (note 5). SITUATION: Unknown. Somewhere in the vicinity of Brishirnot (Kharpran Daly 2004.07.18 Mss), the populated place indicated both on the Survey of India Half-Inch series sheet 83-C/SW (editio 1922) and the AMS sheet NG46-10 Shillong (U502 series, 1959 edition) as Brishyrnot near (±500 m) 25°08'45”N: 92°22'40”E (WGS84 modified from 25°08'45”N: 92°22'50”E Everest 1830). APPROACH: Try to get the skin bag, bones and all transported from Lumshnong (25°10'45”N: 92°22'50”E) for about 7 km generally south along the National Highway NH44 (note 6) to what had been in 1997 an inconspicuous T-junction (note 7) without any tea house, from where a partly motorable track off south-east and towards Khaddum (note 8) leads after an estimated 3 km or 4 km to the huts and houses of Brishyrnot (note 9). CAVE POTENTIAL: So far, altogether three unidentified caves have been reported from the vicinity of the village of Brishyrnot / Brishirnot, namely Krem –>Labit, Krem –>Sahsniang, and Krem –>Shrieh. EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2004.07.18: Brian D. Kharpran Daly had listed some more names of caves I have gathered: Brishirnot village … the caves Krem Shrieh, Krem Sahsniang and Krem Labit (Kharpran Daly, B D 2004.07.18 Mss: Some more names of caves). 2006.03.10: Brian D. Kharpran Daly narrated how he had been told by somebody from Brishyrnot how these people [cavers] walked through our village without caring to look at our caves (Kharpran Daly, B D 2006.03.10 personal communication).
