What appears to represent a sink (swallet, disappearing stream) is said to situated in an area without limestone (note 1) (Kharpran Daly 1997 Mss item 9). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi "u rynga" (noun) is the same as "u rnga" and is »charcoal« (SINGH, N 1906: 172, 177) but the "rykhiang" (adjective) means »dry« as "ryngkhiang" means »dry, parched« (SINGH, N 1906: 177). SITUATION: Somewhere in the vicinity of »Kyrdeng« (note 2), which is said to lie »north of Shillong« (25°34'N: 91°53'E). CAVE POTENTIAL: Also reported from apparently in the same vicinity is not only Krem –>Mawjud, Kyrdum, but also Krem –>Mawliehpoh, Kyrdem, and Krem –>Tirot, Niangdai.

NOTE 1: »Metamorphic rocks (gneiss, micaceous slates, clay slates, hornblendic slates, quartz rocks, etc.) … occur at Nungklow [Nongkhlaw 25°41'N: 91°38'E], on the Northern verge of the hills immediately over the valley of Assam, and here form the entire flank of the hills down to the Boripani river. From Nungklow, they extend South to the Kullong rock [Lum Kyllang 25°37'N: 91°35'E: 1774 m asl], (where a great mass of granite has burst through them) and from thence to near Mowphlang [Mawphlang N25°26'49”: E091°45'26” WGS84], where they become covered by the sandstones. They seem to wind round the Northern flanks of Shillong hill [Shillong Peak 25°33'N: 91°52'E: 1961 m asl], and stretch thence by Pomrong, to Coote, Mooshai and Sunessa; and into the Jynteah hills [Jaintia Hills district]« (OLDHAM, T 1854 / 1984: 11; 1859: 110-111). NOTE 2: Kyrdeng (Kharpran Daly, B D 1997 Mss item 9) is indicated on AMS sheet NH46-10 Shillong (U502 series, 1959 edition) near 25°40'N: 92°04'E and about 5 km or 6 km in a direct line south-west from Kyrdem (25°42'N: 92°05'E), which is said (Neil Sootinck after myntri Kharluhi, Umsning, 2001.04.19 personal communication) to lie about 10 km east along the road from Umroi (±1 km 25°43'N: 91°58'E).
