Description
A man-made 7th century (Pallava period) cave temple (rock-cut chamber used for religious purposes) at the famous Trichy Rock (KNOX 1974: 160; IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 24: 45; LONELY PLANET 1997: 1092; 1999: 1162; 2005: 980; PRICE 1988b: 34). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1991: Proceeding from the lower –>Tiruchchirappalli Rock Temple … you can climb the rest of the 437 steps to the top of the outcrop, with its breathtaking views over plain, river and Srirangam, pausing to visit the Pallava-period Upper Cave Temple, of the early 7th century, which will remind you of shrines at Mamallapuram, its Lord Shiva absorbing in his hair the river Ganges as it descends from Himalaya (WARD 1991, 1993: 66). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2008: The Rock Fort at Tiruchchirappalli Rock Fort, Trichy allows considering the existence of Lower Cave; path leading to the site in front of the Lower Cave, path leading to the Upper Cave, site in front of the Lower Cave, and Upper Cave.
