SIGIRIYA CAVE (KUSCH 1973)

Description
Not a true -cave- (KUSCH 1973a: 139 figure 4) in the speleologically sense of the word but a -half-cave- (KUSCH 1973a: 138), where a south-east facing, up to 15 wide and 3.2 m high cave entrance gives access to a generally 3 or 4 m and up to 5.2 m -deep- (horizontally), modified natural rock shelter. Remnants of a rectangular building indicate that this natural rock shelter once had been used as a troglodyte dwelling. KUSCH (1973a: 138 Abb. 3) gives a photograph showing Ingrid Staber (scale) and a near-horizotal drip-ledge just below the drip-line where the vertical rock face above the shelter merges into the ceiling inside the rain-sheltered space. SITUATION: KUSCH (1973a) locates Sigiriya Cave (KUSCH 1973a: 138) or Sigiriya-Cave (KUSCH 1973a: 139 Abb. 4) at the north-western base of the towering rock of Sigiriya (N07°57': E080°45').
