Description

A modified natural meditation cave (temple cave) associated not only with the Muslim (Sufi) saint Shri Janardan Swami but also with the Hindu saint Shri Dattatreya and, last but not least, with Shri Sant Eknath Maharaj ki Paithan (note 1), is held sacred by tourists visiting the fortified hill of Devagiri (Deogiri, Deoghir, Duwagir) at Daulatabad. CULTURAL HISTORY: Shri Janardan Swami, the Quilledar [note 2] … was also a great saint. Below [what?] is the cave where he meditated. In the same cave Shri Dattatreya (One of the Hindu Gods) himself gave him Darshan [note 3]. In the cave Charan Paduka foot-prints [note 4] of both are on an elevated platform. Shri Sant Eknath Maharaj of Paithan, one of the great saints of Maharashtra, was his disciple. He stayed here for six years (DESHPANDE & SAWANT 2005: 16 location map, 25 description and photographs). It might be wortwhile to consider that a qualandar is a Muslim ascetic or mendicant devotee (note 5) of a Sufi order.A modified natural meditation cave (temple cave) associated not only with the Muslim (Sufi) saint Shri Janardan Swami but also with the Hindu saint Shri Dattatreya and, last but not least, with Shri Sant Eknath Maharaj ki Paithan (note 1), is held sacred by tourists visiting the fortified hill of Devagiri (Deogiri, Deoghir, Duwagir) at Daulatabad.
