Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 07/04/2016

A cave with a frightening number of ramifications already 10 m in is said to be situated in Larung, an area north-east of Lumshnong village (Kalang Pdang, Lumshnong, 1997.03.01 personal communication). ETYMOLOGY: The origin and meaning of the cave name »Krem Larung« (Kalang Pdang, 1997.03.01) or, perhaps, Krem La Rung has not yet been discovered but the Khasi preposition "la" is a sign of possessive case (note 1) and the verb "rung" means to »enter« and to »penetrate« (note 2).

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 07/04/2016

NOTE 1: la (Khasi; preposition) is a sign of possessive case (SINGH, N 1906: 108) as "u la shem la ka masi" signifies »the shed of the cow« (SINGH, N 1906: 108). GURDON, P R T (1906: 207) confirms that the preposition "la" gives the force of the possessive case, e.g. "la ka jong ka jong" (their own). NOTE 2: rung (Khasi; verb) to enter (SINGH, N 1906: 176; SINGH, N 1920: 155); to penetrate (SINGH, N 1920: 371; BLAH, E 2007: 219) ba'n ai rung (transitive verb) to admit (SINGH, N 1920: 9) rung-balang (verb) to enroll or to be admitted as a member of a church (SINGH, N 1906: 176) rung ne jngoh (verb, transitive) to dip (SINGH, N 1920: 124).
