Description
A natural cave, rock shelter or man-made rock-cut chamber where Buddha sat when Devadatta hurled a rock at him. Possibly identical with –>Buddha Samadhi Cave. CULTURAL HISTORY - relgious folklore: »In addition to the caves in the Vulture Peak mentioned by our pilgrim [XUANZANG 648], and by Fa-hsien [FAXIAN (Fa Hian, Fa Hien, Fahian, Fa Hsien) circa 415 for 399-414], we read of others such as the cave which was the residence of the Yaksha Gambhira [note 1], transcribed in Chinese Kin-p'i-lo and sometimes translated Shên-yuan or "Very Far" that is "Profound" (Sarvata Vinaya P'o-s°eng-shih, chapter 16; Pi-nai-ye,chapter 5; Shi-sing-lü, chapter 36). It was in this cave or Yaksha's Palace that the Buddha was sitting when Devadatta hurled the rock at him, and it may be our pilgrim's cave in which the Buddha sat in samadhi« (WATTERS 1905 edited 1988, 2: 152).
