Description
Unspecified salt-petre works (KIRKPATRICK, W J 1811: 295), , were said to have existed at a certain Shorah-kani (note 1). SITUATION: In an unspecified setting and at an unidentified location somewhere on a route from Kaiski-shehr (Kaskishahar) generally south-west to Moosi-kote (Musikot). APPROACH: Starting at Rani-powah [note 2], on the Saite-nuddi (note 3), the travelling distances, given in Ghurries (note 4), are as follows: ghurries hoursto Kaiski-shehr (note 5) 25 10.5 to Sulian-tar (note 6) 25 10.5 to Mahdi (note 7) 3 1.25 to Kali-nuddi (note 8) 3 1.25 to Shorah-kani (note 9) 32 13.3 to Gulkot-baisi (note 10) 33 13.75 to Moosi-kote (note 11) 34 14.0CAVE POTENTIAL: Shorah-kani (KIRKPATRICK, W J 1811) sounds like a corruption of -Chour-ke Khani- (Gorkhali, village of [the] mine) and possibly has been confounded with the famous copper mine or –>Tambeh Khani of Musikot. Assuming that salt-petre works had existed here, it is quite likely that the saltpetre / nitre was leeched from ipregnated soils and these are known to result from bat guano deposited in one or several caves.Unspecified salt-petre works (KIRKPATRICK, W J 1811: 295), , were said to have existed at a certain Shorah-kani (note 1). History
EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1793 February or March: William J KIRKPATRICK, W J (1811: 295) had learned about Shorah-kani, or the salt-petre works during his seven weeks (13 February to 3 April 1793) visit to the then Winter (Nuwakot) and Summer (Kathmandu) capitals of Nepal. Twelve years later, in 1814, Francis Buchanan Hamilton had learned that Galkot … contains three mines of copper, and one of iron (BUCHANAN HAMILTON 1819: 275) whilst somewhere else, namely at Jaleswar, in Mahatari, south from Janakpur, the Raja has a manufacture of saltpetre and gunpowder (BUCHANAN HAMILTON 1819: 164).
