Description
A prehistoric rock art site (cave? or rock shelter?) with drawings in red pigment (COCKBURN 1883b: 125). SITUATION: Somewhere at »Bhalduri« (COCKBURN 1899), which appears to correspond to the »Baldharia« (a clearing with two houses) shown near N24°57': E83°03' on the Survey of India sheet 63-P/01 (1970 edition) in the vicinity of Ahraura (note 1). CULTURAL HISTORY - rock art: COCKBURN (1899: plate 1, opposite page 89) gives an illustration showing a hunting scene. SMITH (in: COCKBURN 1899: 9, note 1) notes: »Man spearing Gonr stag (Rucervus Duvaucelii), from Bhalduria, pargana Ahraura, Mirzapur. The animal has an arrow stuck in in the throat, and was also shown as attacked by dogs …«
