Description
Veshau is the name of a stream [note 1] which issues picturesquely from an orifice [note 2] in a mountain, and at the same place is a declivity down which the waters tumble from a height of 20 yards [18.3 m] with a thundering roar. Hindu devotees throw themselves down from its summit and with the utmost fortitude sacrifice their lives, in the belief that it is a means of securing their spiritual welfare (ABUL FAZL 1590 edited by JARRETT 1893 revised by SARKAR & SEZGIN 1993, 2: 362). STEIN (1899b: 184) identifies the Veshau of Abul Fazl with Visoka, a tirtha (religious bathing place and pilgrimage site) of some repute, situated near the village of Gudar (note 3), where a small stream, the Godavari (note 4), falls down the hill.Veshau is the name of a stream [note 1] which issues picturesquely from an orifice [note 2] in a mountain, and at the same place is a declivity down which the waters tumble from a height of 20 yards [18.3 m] with a thundering roar.
