Description
NOTE 1: Sehore town 23°12'N: 77°05'E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) lies 36 km (22 miles) along the road west-south-west of Bhopal city (23°16'N: 77°24'E). NOTE 2: Neither »Simla« (GOSH, A 1961: 62) nor »Shimla« (JACOBSON, J 1980) is listed on nima.mil/geonames (accessed 16.11.2003) or shown on AMS sheet NF43-04 Bhopal (U502 series, 1959 edition). NOTE 3: The position (Everest 1830) 23°14'N: 77°23'E: [600 m] 1969 feet (JACOBSON, J 1980: 74 table 2) indicates a spot on the northern flanks the height (hill) »1969« (600 m asl) which rises about 5 km south or south-west of Bhopal city (23°16'N: 77°24'E) and south of the Bara Talao (lake).
Seven (7) »rock shelters« (GOSH, A 1961: 62) or five »painted shelters« (JACOBSON, J 1980: 74) of dubious character and nature (perhaps consisting of true caves used as shelters) were examined in search of rock art (cave paintings) but remain speleologically unexplored. ETYMOLOGY (note 1): Simla GOSH, A (1961: 62) Shimla JACOBSON, J (1980: 69 map 1; 74 table 2). SITUATION: GOSH, A (1961: 62) places »Simla Hill« in the Bhopal region simply somewhere in the district of Sehore (note 2). JACOBSON, J (1980: 69 map 1) shows the site »(4) Shimla« south of Bhopal town, above the south-eastern shore of the lake Bhopal Talao, and east of the –>Dharampuri Shelter. JACOBSON , J (1980: 74 table 2) positions »Shimla« at (Everest 1830) 23°14'N: 77°23'E: 1'969 feet = 600 m asl (note 3) near Bhopal in the Huzur tahsil of Sehore district.
