Description
MACARDIEU (1855: 192-193) was told of a »vast cavern« from which iron ore was sampled somewhere near the Manikaran in Parvati valley, Kulu / Kullu district: »The oligist iron mine is situated in a mountain of quartz bordering the left side of the torrent Parbutty [note 1], facing the thermal springs, but on the southern slope opposite Mannikurn valley. … [Natives] brought me back specimens of the mineral … and repeated to me that which I had already leant from a Native, that the iron was extracted from a vast cavern, and that it existed in streaks of great thickness, alternant with quartz.«
NOTE 1: The »Parbutty« of MACARDIEU (1855) is indicated as »Parbati R. [river]« on he Survey of India sheet 52-H (1: 250,00 series, 1973 edition) as a tributary from the east to the river Beas.
