Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 30/03/2016

Archaeologically excavated rock shelter which yielded a Mesolithic habitational deposit. Figure 3 of SELVAKUMAR (1996: 32), titled »View of the rock shelter at Kanvaipatti« (sic!), shows what appears to be an overhanging granite boulder. SITUATION: About 3 km north-west of Kanavaipatti or Kanvaipatti village (note 1) in the Upper Gundar basin (note 2) at the foot of a certain »Kudiraimalai range« (not tracked down).

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 30/03/2016

NOTE 1: The village of Kanavaipatti or Kanvaipatti is neither listed on nima.mil/geonames (accessed 16.11.2003) nor indicated on AMS sheet NC43-12 Rajapalaiyam U502 series, 1955 edition). SELVAKUMAR (1996: 29) associates either the village or the shelter of Kanavaipatti or Kanvaipatti with the absurd position N09°55'72" (sic!): E77°52'20' (unspecified geodetic datum, probably Everest 1830) but shows the site (figure 2) somewhere near N09°55'00”: E077°47'10”. NOTE 2: The Upper Gundar basin covers part of the area between N09°30': E077°30' and N10°00': E078°00' falling on the Survey of India sheets 58-G09, 58-G/10, 58-G13, and 58-G/14.
