NAMUCHI CAVE
33.000000,76.500000
Description
Ranaditya, legendary King of Kashmir, retreated from the world after a reign of 300 years in about 545 AD by leaving through a cave (keyword: exitcave) for the mythical underground world "Patala" (compare: Patal Bhubaneshwar, Uttaranchal State), where he acquired a kingdom in the infernal regions (WILSON 1825: 40-41). Compare the –>Sitanta caves. SITUATION: At an unknown location. The cave is said to be fixed in the hither world under the title Namuchi (Naumukhi = new mouth? or Namo Jee = the honoured true one?) at an unspecified spot —possibly in Jammu & Kashmir State— in the valley of the river Chandrabhaga (Chandarbhaga), which starts at the confluence of the rivers Chandra and Bhaga at N32°34': E076°58' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NI43-16 Palampur (U502 series, 1963 edition) to flow west around the top left (north eastern at N33°00': E076°30') corner of AMS sheet NI43-15 Pathankot (U502 series 1959 edition) to join, already in Kashmir, the river Chenab on AMS sheet NI43-11 Anantnag (1960 edition).
