Lieutenant E. A. Rowlatt travelled on 22nd November 1844 from Sudyah (note 1) upstream on the Burhampooter (Brahmaputra) and, having passed the mouth of the Tainga-panee (Tenga Pani 27°45'N: 95°46'E), noticed that from this point upwards the banks and islands are almost entirely formed of stones [note 2] washed down from the mountains. … Nov. 23rd… by 9 a.m. we reached the Khamptee [Kamti] village of the Kaptan Gohain at Choonpoora (ROWLATT, E A 1846: 477). ETYMOLOGY: The Assamese place name Sunpura, Chunpoora (note 3) or Choonpoora (ROWLATT, E A 1846: 477), from -chunam- (note 4), translates as Lime Town or Limestone Town.Lieutenant E. A.
