Description
A kind of cave or inhabitable rockshelter, in which travellers rest (KIRKPATRICK, W J 1811: 304). SITUATION: Unidentified but presumably (likely though not known for certain) in the Rasuwa district and, perhaps, in the Langtang valley. APPROACH: Something may have become confounded in Colonel Kirkpatrick's route IX. from Noakote to Joongah [note 1], which, at one point, jumps within a day's march of only 50 or 60 km from Ramcha (note 2), a village at about 1980 m asl (note 3) in the valley of the Trisuli River, to what must be an elevation around (±250 m) 4250 m asl just below Mount Deoralli [note 4], one of the peaks of Himma-leh [Himalaya], and among the loftiest of them (KIRKPATRICK, W J 1811: 304). The route is said to run as follows: To Dhyboon N. b. E. 20 ghurries [note 5] -- You descend from the town of Noakote [note 6] into the Noakote-baisi [note 7], and then proceed along the east bank of the Trisoolgunga [note 8]; at the foot of Dhyboon [note 9] passes the Bettrouli [noe 10], which you cross, and then ascend Dhyboon. The town of Dhyboon [note 11] stands at some distance below the summit. There is no material ascent between Noakote-baisi, and the Bettroulli, though the road is uneven and bad. The acclivity of Dhyboon from Bettroulli is so good that a tolerable Tanyan [note 12] may be safely rode the whole the whole way. You are 3 to 4 ghurries in reaching Dhyboon, after crossing the Bettroulli … To Kabhria [note 13] N.N.W.12 ghurries -- From Dhyboon to Kabhria, there is neither ascent or descent deserving notice. The road, however, is winding … To Ramcha N.b.E or N.N.E. 10 ghurries -- There is an ascent between Kabhria and Ramcha [note 14], for three or four ghurries, but it is not of a difficult nature. This place is between Dhooncho [note 15] and Kabhria. To Sisnia-ooral, N.E. 25 ghurries -- The first three or four ghurries from Ramcha, the road winds round the mountain, after whic the whole way is a descent till you reach Sisnia [note 16]. The isnia-kola passes this place. It has its rise from the neighbouring mountains of Lawhribinna [note 17], and empties itseld into the Trisoolgunga … To mount Deoralli, N.N.E. 22 ghurries -- The first three or four ghurries, the road winds round Sisnia bottom. After which the whole way to Deoralli is an ascent. Mount Deoralli is one of the peaks of Himma-leh [Himalaya], and is among the loftiest of them. The road passes below it, at the distance of about 3 ghurries from the summit, [304] and of course far below the region of snow.
