Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 23/03/2016

An unspecified number of »numerous caves … where rusted and corroded weapons and dresses of dead warriors are seen …« reported SHARMA (1994: 116) from the hills around the village of »Bhudi« or Badhi, and Budi (note 1). IDENTITY: The particular remains of »dead warriors« (actually post-fighting human skeletons / bones / skulls, weapons, swords, and dresses ascribed to warriors, soldiers, and brigands) are reminiscent of those reported from –>Changru Cave (Pithoragarh District: Garbyang), better –>Chhyangru Gupha (Nepal: Mahakali zone), but there are other »caves« or rock shelters in the vicinity, e.g. at –>Lungtiyar and at –>Pelsiti. SITUATION: ATKINSON (1882-1886, 12: 157) places the solitary, sub-alpine village of »Bhudi« at a travelling distance of »seven marches or about 62 miles« (about 100 km) approximately north-east of Askot (N29°46': E080°21') and on the right bank of Palangar stream above its confluence with the river Kali (also: Mahakali, Vyas Ganga) . PRANAVANANDA (1949: 118) places »Budi« at a walking distance of 71 miles (114 km) from Askot or 5 miles (8 km) from Garbyang (N30°07': E080°51'). CULTURAL HISTORY: »At one time, the Tibetan brigands came up to Bhudi. Raja Raz Bahadur Chand pushed them back. The Dogra army of Zorawar Singh had retreated from Kailash - Manasarowar through this route. This area obviously witnessed many a grim struggle« (SHARMA 1994: 116).

NOTE 1: »Budi« (PRANAVANANDA 1949: 118) or »Bhudi« (ATKINSON 1882-1886, 12: 157) is indicated as »Badhi« near N30°06'30”: E080°51' on AMS sheet NH44-06 Nanda Devi (U502 series, 1958 edition).
