Description
Dimba village, Chidanga zone, Cheringoma district, Sofala province, 34°58'11"E: 18°22'22' N (GPS WGS84), ca. 270 m asl. Surveyed on 27 Aug. 1998 by Herbert Daniel Gebauer, Adriano Germano and Michael Laumanns (BCRA-Grade 4b). Length: 101 m. Vertical range: -9.5 m. The cave is identical with „Caverna Cheringoma no. 1“ (Vachamuteco 1982). A big collapse doline gives access to a voluminous W-E leading horizontal trunk passage (8 m wide, 3 m high and 27 m long) with two daylight openings (one of them is a cylindrical vertical solution shaft) and some lateral passages. All the galleries of the Ninga Rego Swere are rift controlled. Some relicts of a quartzitic subsequent filling can be observed in the clefts of the cave (see photograph no. 3 in ANNEX 1). This may be explained by a sea transgression in quaternary times. Massive stalagmites are existing in the western part of the trunk passage. The entire rest of Ninga Rego Swere does not contain calcite speleothemes. Ninga Rego Swere contain guano deposits which were exploited during colonial times. Today a big bat colony inhabit the cave. Vachamuteco (1982) reported about 5,000 bats.
Fossil cave in Eocene Nummilitic limestones of the Cheringoma formation consisting of a principal gallery on a fracture N 60° with semiellipsoidal shape, on which more narrow and lengthened transversal conduits, on fractures N. 130-140°, intersect. Presence of ceiling channels and calcareous fillings inside the fractures. Abundant presence of guano on the floor and in some parts stalactite and stalagmite calcit deposits of whitish color. The structural elaboration shows the following: 1) N 60° - direction of main karstification with 50.7%; 2) N 130-140° - secondary directions of karstification respectively with 28,1 % and 21.2%.
