Description
Not seen. It was Robert Bruce Foote who had heard »of a cave near Buganpilly, 3 miles [5 km] north-east of Betumcherru [Betamcherla, N15°28': E78°10'], but could gather no reliable information about it« (FOOTE, R B 1884a: 34). A year later, however, »Lieutenant [Henry Bruce] Foote and I devoted the Christmas week [1884] to visit … A group of small caves lying 3 miles [5 km] north of Billa Surgam , and known as the Boganpalli caves« (FOOTE, R B 1885: 235). CAMMIADE (1926): »Bugganipalle caves … about 3 miles [5 km] to the north-east of Betamcherla railway station. They have the advantage of being near a perennial spring on the banks of the main stream draining this area. Besides the existing caves there are in this same area traces of other caves that have collapsed« (note 1). IDENTITY: Compare not only the caves in the –>Kistawa Kona and –>Sanyasula Gavi but also the elusive –>Sanyasi Gavi (DUTT 1981) near Bugganipalle (note 2).
NOTE 1: »Cammiade (1926) confirmed Foote’s reputed caves at Bugganipalle, 3 miles NE. of Bethamcherla railway station« (CRAVEN, S A 1969: 23). NOTE 2: »Buganpilly« (FOOTE, R B 1884a: 31), »Boganpalli« (FOOTE, R B 1885: 235) and »Bugganipalle« (CAMMIADE, L A 1926; CRAVEN, S A 1969: 23) is indicated as »Bugganipalle« near N15°28'20”: E078°10'30”: 390 m asl (Everest 1830) on the Survey of India 57-I/03 (edition 1983).
