General description
MASSON (in WILSON 1841: 81) notices man-made (Buddhist?) rock chambers which were excavated from the perpendicular escarpment below Surkh Tope (red mound). SITUATION: WILSON (1841 location map) indicates Súrkh Tope near Darunta (also: Daruntah, N34°28'36”: E070°21'50” WGS84, nima.mil/geonames accessed 28.05.2004)) at the foot of the Siah Koh, and above the north-eastern (orographically left) bank of the Surkh Rod (Surkhab, Sorkhab), shortly before its confluence with the Kabul Rod (Kabul rud).
