Motena cave is a karst cave in Georgia, in the municipality of Martvili. It is located on the northern slope of the Tabakeli ridge, on the left side of the Abashi river valley, in the vicinity of the village of Pirveli Baldi, at an altitude of 570 meters above sea level.
Description
Brief description of Motena Cave
Motena Cave is developed in Eocene layered limestones. The total length is 95 meters. Mothena cave is horizontal, ascending. Its front part is collapsed and is an open valley. A whitewashed wall has been removed here, guns have been installed. The cave consists of two large halls, which are connected to each other by narrow but high passages. In the south-eastern corner of the last hall, there is a 10 meters step that leads to the second floor of the cave. In the cave there were many stalactites, stalagmites, travertine cascades, stones, curtains, as well as large boulders, exhausted local material. Air is dynamic. A stream of water comes out of the cave, the flow of which is 105 l/s. The flow produces lakes surrounded by calcite crust. The cave stream joins the Abasha river. The cave stream was used for the collective farm of the village of Pirveli Baldi. There is a historical building in the Mothena cave entrance, which was used as a fortress in the Middle Ages. Fauna: Bats, spiders, insects and others live in the cave.
