Description
A number of 400 unspecified rock caves (Strobel, Ch 2002.10.29 Mss), which probably represent rock shelters in white sandstone (Strobel, Ch 2002.10.29 Mss), are said to contain red paintings (rock art) depicting human dancing and riding on animals (note 1). SITUATION: At a number of 400 unspecified locations somewhere in the vicinity of Kakreri, a village marked near 24°54'N: 81°13'N: 310 m asl on AMS sheet NG44-15 Rewa (U502 series, 1959 edition) and at a linear distance of 17 kmor 18 km approximately south-east from Manikpur (note 2) in an area where the Indian Union states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are intertwined along a winding border on the Panna Hills at the northern scarp of the Vindhyan Range of hills.A number of 400 unspecified rock caves (Strobel, Ch 2002.10.29 Mss), which probably represent rock shelters in white sandstone (Strobel, Ch 2002.10.29 Mss), are said to contain red paintings (rock art) depicting human dancing and riding on animals (note 1). EXPLORATION HISTORY: SILBERRAD, C A (1907) had reported several rock shelters containing rock art from this area but the discovery of the Krakeri Rock Caves on a Tuesday (probably in late October 2002) was ascribed by Tiwari, L K (Achaeological Survey of India) to the policeman named Vijay Kumar (note 3).
