Description and situation
… caves in the hill-sides, forming dwelling-places for some of the inhabitants reported (KAYE 1879: 247) from the small valley of Mian-i- Irak (between Unai Pass N34°27': E68°22' and Bamiyan N34°49': E67°49'), west of the Kalu (note 1) and about 10 miles (17 km) from Irak Kotul (note 2), a pass 5.5 miles (9 km) from Kharzar (note 3). The site was reached by marching from Gardan-i- Diwar (Gardandewal N34°30': E68°16', AIMS sheet PI42-06) by the glen Siah Sang, and past the small mud fort Siah Kila to the fort Kharzar. About 5.5 miles (9 km) from Kharzar, the pass Irak Kotul commences and about 10 miles (17 km) from this pass lies the small valley of Mian-i- Irak: After leaving Mian-i-Irak, the road does not continue to follow the course of the stream, which flows through deep chasms in the hills, till it empties itself into the river, which, after watering the Bamian Valley, flows eastward, and subsequently to the north, under the name of the Kunduz River. Quitting the smal valley, our route led us more westerly, across a rugged spur of the Hindukush, separating the water channel of the Irak from that of the Kalu. valley, our route led us more westerly, across a rugged spur of the Hindukush, separating the water channel of the Irak from that of the Kalu.
