Description
A man-made tunnel is said to be found at »Hoolioordroog« (note 1) where »a small hill fort covers a little isolated conical granite rock, exceedingly precipitous, and of difficult access, the path near the top being carried through the body of the rock from whence the aid of a ladder is requisite to reach the enclosed smooth cap on the summit.« (HAMILTON 1828,1: 665). PS: Comparatively "not far" from Huliyurdurga (Holiyurdurga, Hoolioordroog, Huliyar) lies the exit cave of –>Purushottama / Puroshottama near the village of Abbur (N12°42': E077°11').
NOTE 1: »Hoolioordroog« (HAMILTON 1828,1: 665) and »Holiyurdurga« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909) is indicated as »Holiyurdurga« near N12°49': E77°02': 844 m asl (Everest 1830) on the Survey of India sheet 57-H (1988 edition) but as »Huliyar« in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 111 F2 and positioned as Huliyurdurga and Hullyurdurga at N12°49': E77°02' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). The fort lies south of the Bangalore - Hassan road in the southernmost corner of Tumkur district, some 15 km along the road north-east of Mysore and about 55 km along the road south of Shrirangapatnam (Seringapatam, Seringapattana, Shrirangapattana, Shrî-ranga-pattana, Srirangapatna).
