CAVE DESCRIPTION 1976: The »… Shikara shrine [note 2] is built in front of the Adinath temple … is supposed to give access to a cave leading to the Cobhar gorge …« (WIESNER 1976: 226-227). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1981: DOWMAN (1981: 270-271) repeats WIESNER 1976: 226-227). without acknowledgement. CAVE DESCRIPTION 3: »… facing the temple [of Adinath] is a stone shikara of Ganeshwar Bitrag which, people say, hides an entrance to a passage which leads to the Cobhar cave below« (SANDAY 1989).
NOTE 1: Adinath (Adnath) was the father of Matsyendranath and grandfather of Gorakhnath, the first great Jogi (RUSSEL 1916, vol. 1: glossary). NOTE 2: Shikara / sikhara is the Hindi name for the temple spire of a Hindu shrine in North India: »Above the shrine rises a superstructure known as vimana in South India, and a sikara in North India. The sikara is curvilinear and topped with a groved disk, on which sits a pot-shaped finial, while the vimana is stepped, with the grooved disk replaced with a solid dome. Some temples have a mandapa (temple forechamber) connected to the sanctum by vestibules. These mandapas may also contain vimanas or sikaras« (LONELY PLANET, India 2005: 71).
