Description
An anonymous and unspecified »another cave« (CRAVEN 1969: 22 after HEMINGWAY 1907) is characterised by a fabulous subterranean tunnel, which is »reputed to go to Benares« (Varanasi on the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh state). Compare: Dowlaishwaram Cave. SITUATION: On one »Pattisam Island« (note 1) located »on the right [western] bank of the river« Godavari in the vicinity of Dowlaishwaram (N16°57': E081°48'). CULTURAL HISTORY -- fabulous tunnel: If »Pattisam Island« (CRAVEN 1969: 22 after HEMINGWAY 1907) is the village of »Pata Pattesam« (N17°12': E081°39'), the fabulous tunnel to »Benares« (Varanasi N18°52': E083°53') covers a distance of 292 km in a direct line approximately north-est.
NOTE 1: »Pattisam Island« (CRAVEN 1969: 22 after HEMINGWAY 1907) is possibly associated with the village of »Pata Pattesam« (with ferry), which is shown near N17°12': E081°39' on AMS sheet NE44-11 Samalkot (U502 series, 1963 edition) on the western (orographically right) bank of Godavari river (Gudavari) at a travelling distance of 24 km (15 miles) west by north of the town of Kovur (Kovvur N17°01': E081°44'), which lies opposite across (west) the Godavari of Rajahmundry (N16°59': E081°47').
