Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 29/03/2016

A man-made »cave temple« (rock-cut chamber used for religious purposes) with an inscription is reported by SHORE (Calcutta 1799: 383-387 edited London 1808) from Islamabad (note 1) near Chittagong / Chattagam (note 2): »On the 14th of Mágha 904, Chándi La´h Rájà (perhaps, Sándilyah), by the advice of Bowangari Rauli, who was the director of his studies and devotions, and in conformity to the sentiments of twenty eight other Raulis, formed the design of establishing a place of religious worship; for which purpose a cave was dug, and paved with bricks, three cubits in depth [1.37 m], and three cubits also in diameter, in which there were deposited one hundred and twenty brazen images of small dimensions, denominated Tahmudas; also twenty brazen images larger than the former, denominated Lángúda; there was likewise a large image of stone, called Lángúdagárí; with a vessel of brass, in which were deposited two of the bones of T'hácur: on a silver plate where inscribed the Hauca, or the mandates of the Deity … etc.«

NOTE 1: SHORE (1799: 383-387: »The translation of an inscription in the Maga language, engraved on a silver plate, found in a cave near Islamabad«) gives no clue to which of the three possibly places called Islamabad is meant: The Islamabad known as Anantnag (N33°44': E075°10', Kashmir South district, Jammu & Kashmir state, India), the Islamabad called by Hindus Mathura, Muttra (N27°30': E077°41', Uttar Pradesh state, India), or the Islamabad near Chittagong (N22°22’: E091°42’ in Bangladesh). NOTE 2: LAIDLAY in FAXIAN [Fa Hian, Fa Hien, Fahian, Fa Hsien] circa 415 for 399-414, translated 1848 by J.W. Laidlay from Remusat, Klaproth & Landresse 1836 edited 2000: 219, note 6) refers to »… a very curious inscription in the Magah language, found in a cave near Chittagong (As. Researches, II. p. 383).«
