Description
Krem Chuchu, Hole # 1: 18 m climb down over unstable boulders into cave canyon passage. Mud floor. No way on. Length 30 m, vertical range [sic! for: depth] about 15 m. The two caves called Krem Chuchu are both said to lie at an elevation of 1068 m and both drop to canyon passages with mud floors, which one would expected to lie at the same level. One Krem Chuchu, however, drops 18 m and the other 30 m. Lies one Krem Chuchu actually 12 m higher than the other? ETYMOLOGY: I do not understand the Synteng cave name Krem Chuchu. Alternatively, the Khasi verb -juh- means to like, to get tamed, to feel quite at home (SINGH, N 1906: 105), the verb -jah- means to loose, to be deprived of (SINGH, N 1906: 96) --and hence perhaps to sink / insurge--, the adverb -jah- is an abbreviation of -pjah- (cold) or of -kunjah- (lonely) while the noun -ka jájah- means cold rice (SINGH, N 1906: 97). SITUATION: According to the recorded GPS readings (Jonathan Davies using a Garmin Etrex), however, this cave les not 300 m but 466.7 m in a direct line west-north-west (-445.5 m east, 139.2 m north) from the spot on the road (note 1). APPROACH (Davies 2004.02.28 Mss: Krem Chuchu #1 + #2): As for Krem Lynkha Koris [note 2]. Follow the ridge road to N25°20'19-.3 E92°30'02.0-: 1068 m [unspecified precision error, Jonathan Davies 28.02.2004, GPS Garmin Etrex]. Head down the spur towards the Cement Factory on 310°. An obvious Doline is seen to the left after 300 m with 2 holes in base.es not 300 m but 466.7 m in a direct line west-north-west (-445.5 m east, 139.2 m north) from the spot on the road (note 1).
