ETYMOLOGY: Lakha Juar (IAR 1968-1969 / 1972: 66) or Lakhajuar (IAR 1981-82 / 1984: 35) from "lakha" (Sanskrit) ten-thousand (ten thousand, 10'000) and "juar" (note 1). SITUATION 1972: In the –>Bhimbetka area and in the vicinity of Barkhera (note 2), 3 km west of –>Pandunagar and on a hill called Lakha Juar (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1968-69 / 1972: 66). SITUATION1984: »In Lakhajuar (Lat 22°56' N; Long 77°35' E), 3 km west of Bhimbetka« (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1981-82 / 1984: 35). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1984: »Another Buddhist complex … A bund, pavements leading to the rock-shelters, gateway in one rock-shelter, stupas, monasteries and platforms, all made of dressed stones, have been found in the complex« (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1981-82 / 1984: 35).
