Description
The man-made Buddhist »excavations« (HAMILTON 1828, 2: 293) called »Dherm Raj« represent rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes, complete with as troglodyte meditation retreat cells, and may be identical with the –>Pandu Lena at Nasik / Nashik. ETYMOLOGY: Dharma = learning, knowledge; raja = king, master; lena = rock chamber. SITUATION: »Near Nassuk [sic!] are extensive Buddhist excavations, vulgarly called Dherm Raj Lena. They extend round a high conical hill five miles [8 km] from the town« of Nasik / Nashik (N19°59': E73°48').CAVE DESCRIPTION: »Long vaulted cave and dagob … huge statues of the meditative curly-haired Buddha … numerous cells« (HAMILTON 1828, 2: 293).
