Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A closed depression (doline). ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous or indigenous and locally known name has been identified for this thlu (Synteng Khasi for hole, closed depression), which once had been mis-nomed Chestnut Tree Hole (Duxbury 2004.02.14 Mss) though it is neither a hole in a chestnut tree nor a hole near a chestnut tree but a closed depression (doline) behind a tree, which, of course, is an unidentified kind of tree and not a chestnut tree at all (note 1). APPROACH: Attempting to describe how to reach this hole in the ground, which was understood to lie at an unidentified elevation, Joe Duxbury (2004.02.14 Mss: Chestnut Tree Hole) falls back on rudimentary drill ground speak and commands to … follow base of hills approximately north-east from Krem Bam Khnei [i.e. Krem –>Bam Khnai] to next valley. From paddy fields, track leads uphill. To either side are [sic! qua: in February 2004 had been] banana plantations in hollows. At far side of hollow on right [sic!], a high rock buttress well-carved by water, has hole at base. CAVE DESCRIPTION: An abandoned sink, about 3 m or 5 m deep and 3 m wide at base, blocked by earth, with a blocked but -draughting window- (air current) about 1 m in diameter (clothed into English after the wording of Joe Duxbury 2004.02.14 Mss: Chestnut Tree Hole 14 FEB 2004). CAVE POTENTIAL - Prospects: Earth choke (Arbenz, T 2004.02 Mss: Abstracts.xls). well-carved by water, has hole at base.
