Description
There are several cave entrances to unexplored caves (no names mentioned) in sandstone (Brian D. Kharpran Daly 2003.01.14 personal communication). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi -u maw- is a stone while -pat- means to fall and -pàit- to crack, to break but -páit- (SINGH, N 1906: 149) or -pdiet- (SINGH, N 1906: 153) translates into to open by placing the finger on one side of an aperture but -ka páit- is a crowd (SINGH, N 1906: 149, 153). SITUATION: At a walking distance of about 3 km from the village of Mawpait or Mawpat (note 1), which lies about 5 km from Rangtong (note 2), a place somewhere on the road from Shillong (25°34'N: 91°53'E) generally south-west to Nongnah (WGS84 N25°15'57”: E091°19'33”: 1020 m asl).There are several cave entrances to unexplored caves (no names mentioned) in sandstone (Brian D.
