KANAI RESURGENCE

Description
Subsidence of the Eocene Siju Limestone exposed in the seasonal Kanai River has locally left a stretch of tumbled boulders under-washed by many of inaccessible conduits feeding a plethora of karst risings. Thus, the reappearing Kanai resurges without having developed a principal source (spring of water). It is somewhat adventurous to enter the penetrable underground passages where »… it is possible to follow various routes through the boulders for short distances, no more than eight metres« (BROOKS & SMART 1995: 46).SITUATION: The resurgence area in the Kanai nala lies an estimated 3 km downstream from the –>Kanai Sink and is possibly »… best approached by a path leading off west from the track« (motorable fair weather road), which ascends from the »Foresters' Office (Hatisia Beat, Mahadeo Range« at the entrance to the Balphakram (Balpakram) National Park to the Jawaharlal Nehru Helipad (note 1). »Adjacent to a small village and approximately 4 km from the Foresters' Offices, a small track plunges down through the forest to reach the Kanai River just downstream of the resurgence« (BROOKS & SMART 1995: 45-46).
NOTE 1: The road from the Balphakram National Park Headquarters (also: Foresters' offices, Hatisia Beat, Mahadeo Range) ascends along a ridge dividing the Mahadeo nala in the east and Kanai (Karnoi, Kharnai) nala in the west up to the Jawarlahal Nehru Heli Pad. Several inconspicuous footpaths (guide !) off the road descend through "jungle" (fairly dense vegetation) down to stream beds.
