ETYMOLOGY: Wular certainly means 'cave' (GERVIS 1954: 30). SITUATION: About 40 km in a direct line approximately north-west of Srinagar city (N34°05': E074°49') and at an officially submerged but actually inaccessible location beneath the waters of the Wular Lake (N34°30': E074°30'). CULTURAL HISTORY - 1901: Wular … . The boatmen still tell stories of the wicked city and its inhabitants that are supposed to lie under the blue waters, and, as a proof of their veracity, tell you the name signifies -the cave- (DOUGHTY, M 1901: 20-21).
