Description
An unspecified »Cave at Surajpura« (note 1), which »would be about 100' [30.5 m] in length and 30' to 40' [9 m to 12 m] in breadth« (note 2), reported CONSERVATOR OF FORESTS, Dhar State (1946.01.21 Mss) from »near the fall of Dilawra River« (note 3) on the »Mandoo Range [note 4], Mohanpur Circle« (note 5). Also reported from Mandu (note 6) is –>Gagan Gufa and the »caves« (or so) at –>Jahangirpur Gate and –>Saat Kothadi along with the –>Champa Baoli, certain –>Mandu Caves and –>Mandu Undergrounds.
NOTE 1: »Surajpura« (CONSERVATOR … 1946.01.21 Mss) or Surajpur is not identified.NOTE 2: These dimensions can be interpreted -- but this is mere guesswork -- to give the size of a man-made, rock-cut chamber measuring about 9 or 12 by 30 m in ground plan or an about 30 m wide rock shelter protruding 9 or 12 m. NOTE 3: »Dilawra River« (CONSERVATOR … 1946.01.21 Mss) is not identified. NOTE 4: »Mandoo Range« (CONSERVATOR … 1946.01.21 Mss) is probably that section of the Vindhyan range from which IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 17: 171-173) reports »Mandu (or Mandogarh) … historic fort in Dhar State, Central India, situated in 22°21' N and 75°26' E, 22 miles [35.4 km] from Dhar town, on the summit of a flat topped hill in the Vindhyan range, 2,079 feet [633.7 m] above sea-level. … The fort is formed of the entire hill, round which runs a battlemented wall nearly 23 miles [37.0 km] in circuit. Inside are numerous mosques, palaces, tombs, and dwelling-houses, all more or less in a state of decay … The view from the roof of Rupmati's palace is a magnificent one. Below flows the broad stream of the sacred Narbada, its fertile valley lined with fields of wheat and poppy, while to the south the long line of the forest-covered Satpuras stretch ridge behind ridge down to the valey of the Tapti river beyond. Among these hills the sacred peak of Bawangaja [the Bawangaja 644 in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 69 F4] stands conspicuous.« NOTE 5: nima.mil/geonames (accessed 16.11.2003) lists eight villages called Mohanpur or Mohanpura but none of them is anywhere near to Mandu (N22°22': E075°23') in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh. NOTE 6: Mandu / Mandoo (*) or Mandogarh (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 17: 171), Mandow (HAMILTON 1828,2: 204-205) at N22°22': E075°23' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) or at N22°21': E075°26': 630 m (Everest 1830, IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 17: 171) in Dhar district (Madhya Pradesh) is shown in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 69 H3) at a travelling distance of 36 km along the road approximately south from Dhar town (N22°36': E075°18') and on the southern rim of the Vindhyan range north of the Narmada river. * Not to be confused with the other Mandu N23°48': E085°28' in Hazaribagh / Hazaribag district (Jharkhand) on AMS sheet NF45-01 Ranchi (1962 edition) and in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 59 E4 about 25 km along the National Highway NH33 approximately south-east from Hazaribagh / Hazaribag (N23°59': E085°21') in the upper reaches of the Damodar valley
