Description
A man-made "cave temple" (rock temple: one or several rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes) cut from crystalline Archaean rock (DUTT, N V B S 1981: 1). SITUATION: DUTT (1981 plate 1 "Physiographical map of Andhra Pradesh" on scale 1: 3'000'000) indicates »Yadgir (Yadagiri)« about 25 km in a direct line approximately north-east of Hyderabad (17°22'31”N: 78°28'28”E). This »Yadgir (Yadagiri)« (note 1) appears to be identical with the »Yadagiri Gutta« shown on the "Tourist Map of Andhra Pradesh" (1973, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Directorate of Tourism) a little north or north-west of Raigir (17°32'03”N: 78°56'25”E) which lies at a travelling distance of about 60 km along the National Highway NH202 from Hyderabad towards Warangal (18°00'N: 79°35'E). A tiny »Gravity and geology map of the Godavari Rift« (HARI NARAIN 1987 figure 9 after QURESHY et al. 1968) shows »Gneisses« in the vicinity of (±70 km) 18°N: 79°E.
NOTE 1: Yadgir / Yadagiri (DUTT, N V B S 1981: 1) or, perhaps, one of the two places indicated as »Yadgirpalli« on AMS sheet NE44-09 Hyderabad (U502 series, 1963 edition) 17°35'28”N: 78°57'22”E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) about 30 km in a direct line approximately north-east of Hyderabad (17°22'31”N: 78°28'28”E) and 17°32'44”N: 78°38'02”E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NE44-09 about 55 km in a direct line approximately east-north-east of Hyderabad.
